![]() ![]() ![]() The Foundation's directors are looking into the problem of children's helmets. #Dot by dot for 4 year olds full#A full face helmet may fit a young child well from the ears up but the edges may still fall low enough to interfere with the child's shoulders at the top of their normal range of motion. Most dirt bike headgear is full face but, even though there is considerable overlap in head circumference between adults and children, neck lengths and face heights for kids are usually much smaller. There is also a problem with facial dimensions. Snell standards demand just about all the helmet an adult can reasonably be expected to wear, no one here is sure whether a young child can or should wear that much helmet. Since young children don't have much muscle strength before puberty, there are real questions as to how much helmet they can carry and still navigate effectively. Motorcycle helmets are generally much heavier. However, bicycle helmets are generally light weight and don't usually come in full face configurations. We found that bicycle helmets certified to adult standards were even more effective at protecting children. The biggest concern I have for young children is not whether Snell certified helmets will protect them but whether they can wear a Snell certified helmet and still ride. Found an email from a SNELL Rep responding back to a guys post on another forum. Everywhere I look seems to say they are too heavy for small kids. Man I am not having any luck finding a helmet. ![]()
